July 28, 2026 | Contra Costa County, CA
The Contra Costa Commission for Women and Girls (CCCWG) announces the approval of an exciting new initiative to develop the next generation of female leaders in Contra Costa County and two new members of its executive leadership team.
The Commission has elected Shruti Adusumilli as Secretary and Jennifer Rizzo as Treasurer, joining Chair Marilyn Cachola Lucey and Vice Chair Nakenya Allen. Together, the officers will support the Commission's work to advance the economic security, safety, health, education, and overall well-being of women and girls throughout the county.
The leadership appointments come as the Commission continues strengthening its organizational capacity, expanding community engagement, and developing initiatives that connect residents with opportunities to participate in public policy and civic leadership.
Introducing the Young Women's Public Advocate Academy
Among the Commission's recent accomplishments is the approval of the Young Women's Public Advocate Academy, a new initiative developed under the Commission's Legislative Committee, chaired by Commissioner Sonya Bates.
The Academy is intended to help young women develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to participate in public policy and advocate for issues affecting their communities.
The initiative reflects the Commission's commitment to moving beyond identifying barriers facing women and girls toward creating opportunities for young people to participate directly in the civic processes that shape their futures.
"Young women shouldn't have to wait until adulthood to discover that their voices belong in public policy discussions," said Commission Chair Marilyn Cachola Lucey. "We want them to understand how decisions are made, how to advocate effectively, and how they can influence the policies affecting their schools, neighborhoods, and communities. The Academy is an investment in the next generation of informed, engaged public leaders."
Under Commissioner Bates' leadership, the Legislative Committee will guide the initiative as part of its broader work to advance policies and opportunities that support women and girls.
